Specialty coffee is not just a higher quality coffee. It is a more aromatic coffee, with stricter social and environmental policies and much more regulated. However, this has resulted in a higher cost when compared to commercial coffee and is therefore aimed at a very restricted and limited audience.

To achieve this, numerous barriers must be overcome, from the scalability and mass production of specialty coffee to the promotion and awareness of this type of coffee to the end consumer, since they will be the driving force behind this 4th wave of coffee.
The 4th wave is the consequence of three other waves, the 1st wave that dates back to the 1960s when coffee became accessible to everyone and grew exponentially, a 2nd wave marked by the emergence of coffee shops that offered superior quality coffee from different origins and the 3rd that "reinvents" the way coffee reaches the end consumer, defining the importance of each player in its process, producer, importer, roaster, barista and consumer.
