The best ways to drink coffee at home
There are several ways to drink coffee at home, from automatic machines, filter machines or even manual methods. There are certain aspects that we should consider before buying a machine or tools to extract coffee at home. For example, the extraction time, that is, how long it takes for a particular method to extract the coffee into your cup, the cleanliness and logistics of the process and, also very importantly, sustainability.
Automatic Methods
Automatic espresso machines are probably the best option for drinking coffee at home. This method is very fast, good and sustainable. Your cup of coffee is just a click away on the machine and the only waste it produces is biodegradable. In these cases, the best option is to use coffee beans, as this way the coffee is only ground at the moment you decide to extract it and, therefore, all its aromatic properties are better preserved.
There are also automatic filter machines, which are great for specialty coffees and those who enjoy a longer brew. This is also a sustainable method of brewing coffee, as the only waste left is the paper filters and the coffee grounds after the brewing is complete.
Manual Methods
Manual methods, such as Hario V60 and Aeropress, are recommended for those who have some knowledge about proper coffee extraction. Firstly, the grind must be adequate, which varies depending on the preparation method. Secondly, the water should not be boiled, as this will burn the coffee, and its ideal temperature for extraction should vary between 92 and 96 degrees. If you do not have a temperature gauge, the best way is to let the water boil and wait 1-2 minutes before starting the extraction process.
Coffee Storage
Coffee, whether ground or whole, should be stored in dark, dry places with little temperature variation. Normally, it is best to use the packaging you received when you bought the coffee. This should be properly sealed to reduce the entry of oxygen and thus prevent the coffee from oxidizing. In your home, you should also look for a cupboard or drawer that is less exposed to sunlight, i.e., less used.
With a little care and a few tips we can make and drink better coffee.
